Christmas in July?

I hear in the next few weeks it will be Christmas in July at Put-in-Bay.

That doesn’t make any sense. It may be only a few hours away, but why would I go there?

I remember Christmas. It was so cold, it shivered me through my thick fur coat. And it got dark outside so early. And the deep drifts of soft, white snow. Well, I guess I enjoyed going outside, jumping off the porch into the fluffy white sea and plowing meandering trails throughout the yard. When I got cold, I stumbled my way through the snow back to the porch, trudged up the swept off steps, and back into the house.

The house always smelled so piney and good, usually closest to the tree that somehow sprouted up overnight in the living room. Filled with bright, colorful balls that hung on the tree just out of my reach. I never understood where the tree came from, or where it went a few days after all the fireworks and gun shots that go off late that one night, waking me up and driving me crazy.

And the presents that lay under that tree! All different colors and sizes, so shiny and with writing on each one that I couldn’t make out. I can type (obviously!), but I can’t read Daddy’s chicken scratch handwriting. I always assumed all those presents were for me. In a way, they were. When they weren’t bones or balls or toys for me to play with, I pounced on the paper that was ripped out the boxes that weren’t for me.

I guess maybe I liked Christmas after all, and maybe next year I will head up to Put-in-Bay. I can’t wait to play in the snow again, see these trees, and get presents! Hope to see you there!
